Nowadays, fewer people want to pursue blue-collar jobs because of the notion that these kinds of jobs are fully labour-intensive. According to a survey by Deloitte, it was found that only 3 in 10 parents would encourage their children to pursue a career in manufacturing

There are certain things that a company can do to attract people to apply to these blue-collar jobs. These are listed as follows:

1.

Competitive
pay

Companies are not willing to pay blue-collar workers a decent salary. This makes the worker feel unvalued as they do not get the returns of the time and efforts put in by them. This acts as a demotivating factor and so they always keep on looking for better opportunities. Offering competitive pay will help the company to retain them for a longer period.

2.

Offer Apprenticeship
Programs

People often consider white-collar jobs more superior to blue-collar jobs because of the stigma that people doing white-collar jobs are more intelligent because of the higher level of education that they attain. However, a plumber may not have good reading and writing skills, but he has project management, problem-solving, and people skills. Therefore, there is a dire need for companies and especially the recruiters to change this perception. Companies can offer apprentice programs wherein the individuals will get an opportunity to learn, train, and practice these skills so that they can perform it to the best of their abilities.

3.

Recognize and Reward
Blue-Collar Workers

Many companies have quarterly or annual award nights to recognize and reward their employees. These awards act as a motivation for employees to work harder. However, many companies rarely reward blue-collar workers for all their hard work. Companies can also keep several incentives for blue-collar workers like flexible work hours, bonuses to outperforming employees, and so on.

4.

Opportunities
for Advancement

Companies can promote blue-collar workers in decision-making or advisory positions. As these workers are the ones who work on the field and take care of the daily operations, they are the best people to advise and give recommendations regarding the day-to-day operations. People will be more attracted to apply for blue-collar positions if they know that there are opportunities to grow and evolve into larger roles.

5.

Emphasize
ROI

There is a notion that if one earns an undergraduate or graduate degree then there are better chances of earning. However, each year many people drop out of colleges because of several reasons. Even after an increase in the number of people getting higher education, the unemployment rate is very high. After getting a degree, people are not even willing to undertake blue-collar jobs as they want ROI on the amount that they invested in to get that degree. However, if a person has a particular skill and commercializes it then he/she can earn a decent amount each month without stressing about high tuition fees, student debt, and so on. For instance, a simple skill like driving a car can be used to earn a minimum of Rs. 20,000 every month.

6.

Post-blue-collar
jobs online

Today’s generation especially millennials and Gen Z are very tech-savvy and look for job opportunities online. Companies can post about the various blue-collar openings online on various platforms which the younger generation uses to search for jobs. Listing down a complete list of roles and responsibilities along with certain motivational factors like flexible work hours, training programs, and opportunities for advancement will attract more people to apply.

7.

A Group
Outing

The company can organize a one-day trip or a group lunch which can prove beneficial as the workers get to informally interact with each other. This can help to create various social groups and can develop a sense of belongingness amongst the employees. This can act as an indirect incentive.

8.

Providing a Safe
Work Enviorment

Blue-collar workers will feel that the employer cares for them when it takes measures to provide a safe working environment. For instance, the use of safe equipment and machinery for construction workers. Employees feel valued when the company invests in safe working conditions.
